Anne Winn - Habitat for Humanity Fund Raiser Auction
December 13th, 2005 , 12 Noon

Dec. 13 sale at William H. Bunch Auctions to benefit Habitat for Humanity, Katrina victims

Anne Winn is breaking up her house – and helping to build a house for people left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

After 35 years, Winn is relocating from her 68-acre estate in Nantmeal Township, Chester County. Winn’s hillside stone home overlooking a 4-acre lake and surrounded by terraced Japanese gardens was featured in Architectural Digest last year. All of the furnishings, including an array of country furniture, oriental rugs, fine art and a Steinway grand piano, will be auctioned Dec. 13 at William H. Bunch Auctions and Appraisals on Route 202 in Chadds Ford, PA. In a unique charitable gesture, she is donating 25 percent of the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity towards construction of housing in Katrina devastated New Orleans.

“It takes about $45,000 to build a house and I’m hoping to raise that,” said Winn, who first became involved with Habitat for Humanity when she volunteered to work on a home in Camden, N.J.

Veteran auctioneer Bill Bunch said this is the first time in the 32 years he has wielded the gavel that a client has donated a percentage of the sale to charity.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for everyone to participate in an fundraising event for an organization that is doing so much to help fellow Americans in distress. It’s great to have a consignor who has such an insightful view of the world and is so generous,” he said.

Of the 160-plus lots consigned by Ms. Winn to go on the block, Bunch expects a fine 10-by-14 antique Heriz carpet will fetch the highest price, between $10,000-$15,000, though the 1979 vintage Steinway Model S black lacquer piano will compete in the same range for top lot. As is the usual case in one of Bunch’s sales, there will be material from other consignors, but the Winn material will be clearly marked so bidders will know which items are earmarked for the charitable gift. The sale will contain about 500 lots in all.

In a distinguished career as an advertising copy writer and producer, Winn also provided voiceovers for commercials for companies such as American Express. Her ad-lib banter with partner Garrett Brown aired on Molson beer ads for 13 years. Winn and Brown are the winners of two Clio awards, the Oscars of television commercials. Their works are considered to be some of the best radio spots ever created.

An artist herself, Winn collected contemporary art, including a whimsical triptych of flying Holsteins by West Chester artist John Supplee, titled “Sacred Holy Cow”. She also was a patron of budding young artists she would encounter at Philadelphia area shows and galleries, such as British born and PAFA trained sculptress Kate Brockman, who is represented by 3 lots in the sale.

“I like paintings, rugs, blanket chests, whimsical things, ” she said. “you could say I’m an acquisitor rather than a collector.”

A daylong preview will be held at the Bunch gallery on Dec. 12 from 10 AM. There will be a champagne dessert soiree that night from 6 PM to 8 PM, with a musician performing on Winn’s piano, one of two Steinways in the sale. Bidding starts at noon on Dec. 13.
